Finding and Using Images From Web Based Sources

When communicating health information, it is often helpful to accompany written or verbal descriptions with an image -- an illustration, photograph, pictogram, clipart, or animation. There are several excellent sources of public health oriented images online.

A word about “Fair Use”...

When selecting images, always make sure that you check the copyright policy. While many of the images in the these collections are in the public domain (free of copyright restrictions), others may require the user to credit the originating institution/contributor, or contact them for permission to use the image.

  • Public Health Image Library (PHIL)
    The CDC’s Public Health Image Library (PHIL) contains photographs, illustrations, and video on a wide range of public health topics. For use guidelines see the FAQ link. The CDC also maintains a Parasite Image Library and links to other government image libraries.

  • MedlinePlus Encyclopedia
    The National Library of Medicine’s MedlinePlus Encyclopedia is published by A.D.A.M. and contains thousands of medical photographs and illustrations. See Medline’s copyright FAQ for use guidelines. 

  • USP Pictograms
    The United States Pharmacopeia (USP) is the official public standards-setting authority for all prescription and over-the-counter medicines, dietary supplements, and other healthcare products manufactured and sold in the United States . Their website provides a free, downloadable pictogram library of standardized graphic images that help convey medication instructions, precautions, and/or warnings to patients and consumers.

  • Images from the History of Medicine (NLM)
    This National Library of Medicine database contains nearly 60,000 images in the prints and photograph collection of the History of Medicine Division (HMD). Copyright permission and ordering information can be found via the homepage.

  • Discovery Channel School: Clip Art Gallery: Health & Safety
    DiscoverySchool.com provides 38 health and safety clip art images. Their food and science collections may also be of interest. See their copyright information for use guidelines.

  • Hardin MD: Medical Pictures
    Hardin Library for the Health Sciences, University of Iowa is the creator of Hardin MD, a meta-directory of Internet health resources. Their directory of medical pictures links to Web-based images of hundreds of diseases.

  • Microsoft Office Online Clip Art & Media
    Microsoft’s clip art and media collection is designed to supplement the collection that is available via their Microsoft Office application. Clip art, illustrations, animations, and sounds are available for download.

  • Rollins School of Public Health: Medical Health Image Collections
    A comprehensive list of health oriented image websites available online.
