Multilingual Health Information Resources Online

Public Health workers are often asked to provide reliable health education materials for multicultural audiences. Cultural and health literacy are important job skills for effectively addressing the needs of a diverse population. A number of excellent resources are available online:

  • American Indian Health
The National Library of Medicine has designed this website “to bring together health and medical resources pertinent to the American Indian population including policies, consumer health information, and research.”  The Health Topics section addresses several conditions, including diabetes, cancer, and mental health.

  • EthnoMed
Created by medical librarian Ellen Howard and associates at Seattle ’s own Harborview Medical Center , EthnoMed contains information on cultural beliefs and medical issues pertinent to new immigrants to Seattle . The website also lists Patient Education Resources in a number of languages, including Chinese, Vietnamese, Cambodian, Somali, and Spanish. Be sure to also browse EthnoMed’s Related Websites list.

  • MedlinePlus Spanish
The National Library of Medicine’s preeminent consumer health information website is also available in Spanish. MedlinePlus also includes Easy-To-Read health information and information for Low Vision Users.

  • NN/LM Multilingual Health Information
The National Network of Libraries of Medicine has compiled a very useful list of multilingual health information websites, including Tuft University ’s SPIRAL (Selected Patient Information Resources in Asian Languages) website and Multicultural Mental Health Australia .
