Step two: Decontamination Order

7. Property has been determined to be unfit for occupancy. Post copy of Decontamination Order and red tag property with the following sign:

Do not occupy property sign

8. Send cover letter with Decontamination Order to property owner and carbon copy:
  • Local Code Enforcement or Building Department
  • Local police
  • Washington State Department of Health
  • Puget Sound Clean Air Agency
  • Other parties with property interest
9. File Decontamination Order with property records at King County Division of Records and Elections (Department of Information and Administrative Services.)

10. Is property owner complying with the requirements of the Decontamination Order? (Yes or No):
  • Yes, property owner is complying with the requirements.

  • No, property owner is not complying with the requirements of the Decontamination Order and has not submitted an appeal.
    Next steps:
    • Send notice to property owner and start civil penalty process.

      Has property owner complied after receiving notice of civil penalty? (
      Yes or No):

      • Yes, property is complying after receiving notice of civil penalty.

      • No, property owner is not complying after receiving notice of civil penalty. Continue with civil penalty process. Make referrals as needed to other agencies and to the Office of the King County Prosecuting Attorney for additional action.
