ALERT: Jelly-fruit cup poses choking hazard
Wednesday, July 26, 2000

KING COUNTY, WA - Jelly-fruit cups may pose a choking hazard in young children, according to the King County Medical Examiner. This alert follows the death of a 2 year old child who choked on an imported jelly-fruit cup.

"Parents need to be very careful and monitor what their young children eat," said Dr. Alonzo Plough, Director of Public Health - Seattle & King County. "Many small food items or other things that children put in their mouths can be dangerous for young children."

This product, produced in Asia, is marketed in several fruit flavors under the designation "Conjac Jelly." It is described as a mini gel snack in a small plastic cup containing a fruit chunk. The package is labeled with an appropriate warning regarding the hazard for young children, but this tragic incident emphasizes the need for greater public awareness.
