KING COUNTY, WASHINGTON - On the advice of Public Health Seattle & King County, Seattle Parks and Recreation has temporarily closed a stretch of Alki beach reaching approximately from 49th Avenue SW to 61st Avenue SW because hypodermic needles have washed ashore from an unknown source.
Park visitors this afternoon noticed the capped and unopened needles washing ashore, and called 9-1-1. Seattle police and fire units responded. Because the needles present a potential safety and health hazard, Parks and Public Health Seattle & King County have posted signs advising people to stay off the marked areas of the beach.
Parks staff will be on site into the evening to ask people not to enter the closed area. Parks will reopen the beach when it is determined that no more hypodermics are arriving on shore.
