King County Board of Health Meeting on January 20, 2006

KING COUNTY, WA - The King County Board of Health is holding its first meeting of the new year on Friday, January 20 from 9:30 AM to 12:30 PM.

The meeting will be held at the following location:

King County Council Chambers
10th Floor, King County Courthouse
516 Third Avenue, Seattle

9. Briefing: Communities Count Report
A panel of speakers will brief the Board on the recently released Communities Count: Social and Heath Indicators Across King County.  The speakers will describe key findings from the 2005 report and ways that partners are using the report to promote community change.  Panel members will include: Michael Brown, Director of Community Projects, The Seattle Foundation; David Okimoto, Senior Vice President Community Services, United Way of King County ; Dr. Kathryn Horsley, Social Scientist, Public Health – Seattle & King County ; and Carol Maurer, Manager, King County Children and Family Commission, Public Health – Seattle & King County .  The panel will be moderated by Sandy Ciske, Regional Health Officer, Public Health – Seattle & King County .

10. Public Health Standards
Joan Brewster, Director of Public Health Systems Planning and Development for the Washington State Department of Health, will present an overview of the Standards for Public Health in Washington State .  Her presentation will include the background on the development on the Standards, complementary but delineated roles and responsibilities for state and local government, and the process of measuring performance to the Standards.  Kathy Uhlorn, King County Board of Health Administrator, will review the 2005 Performance Assessment Report for Public Health – Seattle & King County (PHSKC).  She will also provide information on PHSKC’s performance in relation to other jurisdictions in Washington State and ongoing efforts to meet the Standards.

11. Briefing on HIV/AIDS goals
The July 2005 HIV/AIDS Update to the King County Board of Health generated Board member interest in HIV/AIDS program goals, resources, and measurable outcomes. This follow-up presentation by Robert W. Wood, MD, and Gary M. Goldbaum, MD, MPH will provide an overview of CDC and local HIV prevention and care goals and outcomes measured by federally supported epidemiologic data analysis. Drs. Wood and Goldbaum will recommend a set of program results/outcomes that they believe are important for the to Board of Health review on an annual basis.
