| “Packed House” Provides Councilmember Ferguson with Critical Public Input on Sheriff’s Office Reforms | |||
| Input will help guide Council Legislative Efforts | |||
| An
audience of more than 250 deeply concerned citizens joined Metropolitan
King County Councilmember Bob
Ferguson and King County Sheriff Sue
Rahr in a packed Inglemoor High School cafeteria April 4. The
overflow crowd came to Kenmore to talk about civilian oversight of investigations
into allegations of Sheriff misconduct. During the meeting the public voiced a variety of concerns. Interest in the meeting extended past the scheduled meeting time, with Councilmember Ferguson and Sheriff Rahr staying an extra half-hour for a series of one-on-one conversations with those in attendance. Information gathered at the meeting as well as information captured by surveys available to citizens will be considered by the Council as they shape their civilian oversight legislative package. The citizen survey can be found on Ferguson’s website. “It is clear from the meeting and the surveys that most people favor greater citizen oversight,” said Ferguson, chair of the Council’s Law, Justice, & Human Services Committee. “Without this oversight, citizens will not get the justice they deserve; disreputable deputies will not pay the price they should; and the overwhelming majority of deputies who serve with honor will continue to be tainted unfairly.” “It was clearly the most moving town meeting that I’ve sponsored.” District 1 includes North Seattle, Shoreline, Lake Forest Park, Kenmore, Bothell, and part of Woodinville. |
