More than a decade after he sponsored the Growth Management Act as a state representative and after years of leadership on growth management issues, Councilmember Phillips is excited to finally have the opportunity to chair the Growth Management and Natural Resources Committee in 2007.

Council Proclaims Larry Phillips Day

Wife Gail and son Brett were in on the surprise to honor Councilmember Phillips for his work as council chair.

In honor of Councilmember Phillips’ three years of leadership as chair of the Metropolitan King County Council, Phillips’ council colleagues surprised him with a recognition and proclaimed January 8, 2007 “Larry Phillips Day.”

Committee Reviews Storm Response

As the new chair of the Growth Management and Natural Resources Committee, Councilmember Phillips used the first committee meeting of the year to review the wind and rain storms’ effects on King County’s natural resources and utilities. Read more.

 

Council Adopts Flood Hazard Management Plan

After fall’s reminder about the importance of flood management, the King County Council unanimously adopted the 2006 Flood Hazard Management Plan, sponsored by Councilmember Phillips. The plan addresses King County’s six major river systems. Read more.

North Seattle Boys and Girls Club Gets Retired Metro Van

Councilmember Phillips secured a retired van from King County Metro’s vanpool program for the North Seattle Boys and Girls Club. The club plans to use the van to transport kids to activities around King County. Last month, Phillips donated a retired van to the Low-Income Housing Institute.

 

Council Democrats Urge State to Legalize Gay Marriage

Under Councilmember Phillips’ leadership, the King County Council Democrats sent a letter to the Washington State legislature urging members to pass marriage equality legislation during the 2007 legislative session.

Sound Transit Adopts Draft ST2 Plan

The Sound Transit Board adopted a draft ST2 Plan which would extend light rail to Northgate, Lynnwood, Downtown Bellevue, Overlake, Federal Way, and potentially Tacoma and Downtown Redmond. Board members are now seeking public input on the draft before adopting a final plan in April and sending it for a public vote in November.

First Light Rail Train Unveiled

The first light rail train has arrived in Seattle and is now visible running on the track in SODO for testing. The train can hold 200 passengers, has low floors and 4 wide doors on each side for easy boarding, and is equipped with air conditioning and cloth seats for a comfortable ride. Read more.

 

Olympic Sculpture Park Opens

District Four is home to a beautiful new gem of public space. The Olympic Sculpture Park on Seattle’s waterfront is now open to the public, and there is no admission fee to visit. The park was paid for with private and public funds, including a contribution from King County.

Phillips Calls for More Scrutiny of Elections Security Plan

At the request of the King County Council, the Elections Division has developed an elections security plan to ensure King County elections are safe and accurate. Councilmember Phillips is calling for independent citizen, peer, and expert review of the plan. Read more.

 

 

Councilmember Phillips Tours Streetcar Construction

Councilmember Phillips accompanied City of Seattle staff to see the South Lake Union Streetcar construction, and toured the proposed Sound Transit streetcar corridor on First Hill. Councilmember Phillips was pleased to learn construction is progressing on-schedule.
