Update! Council Adopts Oversight for the Sheriff’s Office Today the King County Council adopted legislation sponsored by myself and Councilmember Julia Patterson to ensure civilian oversight of the Sheriff’s Office. This legislation was crafted over the course of many months with input from citizens, law enforcement professionals, oversight offices in other jurisdictions and from the Blue Ribbon Panel examining the Sheriff’s Office. The legislation establishes (1) the Office of Law Enforcement Oversight that reports directly to the King County Council and (2) a permanent and ongoing law enforcement audit process that will analyze and suggest course corrections for investigative processes and policies. I will have more details in my next Enews.
