Mental Health Town Hall was a Success

Next week, we will celebrate our Nation’s independence. As we barbeque and enjoy time with our friends and families, I hope you will join me in reflecting on the historic significance of this day.

If you are eating out to celebrate the Fourth, you may find yourself wondering about the nutritional value of what you’re eating. Unfortunately, it can be difficult, if not impossible to know how many calories and fat grams are in the food you eat at local restaurants. Below is information about a plan to give consumers more information about the food they eat in King County restaurants and a quiz to test your nutritional IQ.

Your Fourth of July festivities may include getting out on Puget Sound or Lake Washington. In the early 1900’s, our region was home to a fleet of passenger ferries that crisscrossed Puget Sound and Lake Washington carrying people to work and leisure. Today, just a few passenger ferry routes remain and state funding for the service is scheduled to end. Below you can find out more about a study that could lead to new passenger ferry routes and service on our local waterways.

I also want to take this opportunity to ask you to help King County build on the recent passage of my legislation to improve the welfare of animals in King County by fostering an animal from a local shelter. This is a great way to share your home with an orphaned animal while they wait for a permanent home.

In this enews, you will also find information about some great summer activities, including a major soccer tournament in Tukwila and SoCoCulture, South King County’s arts and cultural coalition, whose members put on some amazing events, from car shows to Shakespearian plays.

I hope you have a safe and fun Fourth of July.

Julia Patterson
King County Councilmember - District 5

Information for Healthy Food Choices

Eating out while at the same time eating right can be a daunting challenge. Unfortunately, we are often left guessing the nutritional value of our favorite restaurant foods. I am working to change that. Currently, the Seattle/King County Board of Health, which I chair, is considering legislation to require chain restaurants to provide nutritional information to customers, such as the number of calories and the amount of fat and sodium in the food they serve. This will help consumers make informed choices about what they eat when they dine out.

I am also working to eliminate harmful trans-fats from the foods we eat. Trans-fats have no nutritional value and contribute to heart disease and obesity. Other cities have successfully banned trans-fats and removed this unhealthy additive from
locally served food.

Take this short quiz to see how difficult it really is to assess the nutritional value of food, without accurate information.

The Return of the Mosquito Fleet

Join me on July 2nd to learn about the potential of passenger-only ferries.

From the late 1800’s to today, passenger ferry service has played an important role in moving people in the Puget Sound region. At the turn of the 20th century, passenger ferries connected dozens of communities across the Puget Sound and Lake Washington. This service, which became known as the Mosquito Fleet, was phased out in the 1930’s with the rise in popularity of the automobile.

Today, our region is facing tremendous population growth, and west sound cities like Bainbridge Island and Bremerton are booming, while major job centers still remain located along the I-5 and I-405 corridors. At the same time, funding for passenger ferry service is being cut at the state level and there exists no long term plan for expanding existing ferry service and launching new routes across the Sound.

I have proposed a comprehensive study to pull regional elected, civic, business and community leaders together to consider the viability of reinstating a passenger-only ferry system. Our waterways don’t need maintenance, don’t develop potholes and aren’t subject to congestion. We should be maximizing this incredible natural resource to move people and support smart land use development.

Read more about this study, which kicked off last month.

You’re Invited! Passenger Ferry Summit

If you want to learn more about the discussions taking place to expand passenger ferry service, please join me, King County Councilmember Dow Constantine and leaders in the passenger ferry industry at Salty’s in Alki on the Monday, July 2nd for an informative discussion about passenger ferry service in the Puget Sound Region. Thank you to the Cascadia Center for sponsoring and organizing this important event.

Foster an animal and help us move toward no-kill.

Foster a Shelter Animal and Help King County Shelters Move to No-Kill

Recently, the King County Council adopted my legislation to improve the welfare of animals in King County. A key part of this plan is to transition our animal shelters to “no-kill,” meaning only extremely dangerous and very ill animals are euthanized. In order to achieve this goal we are going to need your help. Our shelters simply do not have the space to handle all the animals in need in King County. By fostering an animal you can give that animal a better life while they wait to be adopted. This will help us move toward a future when only dangerous and terminally ill animals are euthanized.

If you are interested in helping King County reduce euthanasia rates by fostering an animal, 206-296-3946.

If you can’t foster but still want to help you can find out about all the great volunteer opportunities from dog walking to cat cuddling.

The Coalition for a No Kill King County also has great information on how you can help shelter animals in our community.

Mental Health Town Hall was a Success

On June 25th 400 King County residents turned out for a town hall meeting on the Mental Illness & Drug Dependency Action Plan. Participants heard from clients, providers, and administrators who work every day to help those suffering from mental illness and chemical dependency.

Improving King County’s mental health treatment system is a top priority of mine. If we don’t properly treat individuals suffering from mental health problems, our criminal justice system is burdened with rising costs and caseloads. Not only is this inhumane, but it costs taxpayers millions of dollars every year. By ensuring that all our citizens have access to mental health care, we can better the quality of life for many of our fellow residents and reduce criminal justice and emergency medical costs.
