| Council Approves Northgate Park and Ride Package | |||
| Legislation Expands Commuter Parking, Creates Park | |||
| The
Metropolitan King County Council today approved a legislative package that
will help revitalize the region’s oldest shopping center and its surrounding
community.
“As the councilmember who represents the Northgate neighborhood—and a daily user of the Northgate Transit Center— I know well the development setbacks and community frustrations that measure Northgate’s past,” said Councilmember Bob Ferguson, chair of the Council’s Capital Budget Committee, and sponsor of the legislative package. “With this vote, one can now realistically imagine a thriving urban center with new green spaces, a new library, a new and attractive shopping mall, an urban salmon stream, attractive housing and easy transit connections to and from most anywhere in the region.” The Council approved the sale of the Northgate Park and Ride—which is located on 5th Ave NE just north of the mall—to the city of Seattle. The city plans on converting the parcel into a park for the Northgate community. The Council also approved two separate lease agreements for 630 parking spaces near King County’s Northgate Transit Center, located south of the mall, consolidating all Northgate-area transit commuter parking near the Transit Center. “These legislative actions are but a few steps on a long trail traveled by stakeholders with foresight and determination,” said Ferguson. “Recognition must be paid to neighborhood advocates who fought for community-based urban development and to City Councilmember David Della for his leadership. All have played a role in a plan that will transform Northgate from a neighborhood shopping mall into a regional destination.”
