Statement from County Council Chair Larry Phillips on State Supreme Court Ruling Upholding the Defense of Marriage Act

“I am deeply disappointed by the State Supreme Court’s ruling to uphold our state’s ban on same-sex marriage. Historically, courts in the United States have played a vital role in protecting minorities from the tyranny of the majority in matters of civil rights. Sadly, the majority on the court today, strayed from that tradition.

“We owe a debt of gratitude to the brave couples who joined as parties to this historic lawsuit, as well as to the hard-working lawyers, organizations, and individuals who brought this suit forward and supported the principles behind it. I would also like to congratulate the four courageous justices who voted against discrimination in this case.

“This fight has just begun, and I will stand with those who want to end discrimination. I look forward to the day when gays and lesbians will no longer suffer discrimination and loving couples will enjoy marriage equality in our state.”
