Thousands of Basic Health slots still available for individuals without insurance
King County Councilmember Phillips is trying to spread the word to those eligible

If you’re one of the nearly 200,000 King County residents without health insurance, there are still slots available in Washington’s Basic Health program. Metropolitan King County Councilmember Larry Phillips is encouraging eligible families and individuals to apply now, as enrollments in Basic Health are limited and filled on a first-come, first-served basis.

“I want to make sure that those without insurance don’t miss an opportunity to get coverage,” said Phillips, a member of the King County Board of Health. “Illnesses and injuries are stressful enough without the added burden of wondering how to afford the care you or your children need. Our country is far from having a perfect system to provide for the uninsured, but I encourage King County residents to take full advantage of the assistance we have available in our state.”

Basic Health provides reduced-cost health care coverage—and in some cases free health care coverage for children—to qualified Washington State residents who are ineligible for Medicare. Qualification is based on income. An individual with a monthly income less than $1633 or a family of three with a monthly income less than $2767 would be eligible. Contact Councilmember Phillips at 206-296-1004 or larry.phillips@metrokc.gov for information and an enrollment packet.

In the 2007 budget, King County committed to working toward ensuring all children in King County have access to health care.

“No child should be without the safety net of health insurance—that’s the ultimate goal,” said Phillips. “We are making positive strides at both the county and state level toward finding sustainable ways of increasing children’s access to health care. As we make progress, it’s important to reach out to uninsured parents so they know about their options.”
