Maleng was one of the most decent, sincere people I have known in public
life. He always had a kind word, some gentle advice for a younger colleague.
When times were tough, when I was being sued or facing difficult policy
choices, he was a calm voice encouraging me to keep my chin up, hold fast
to my beliefs, and do the right thing.
Norm loved
the law and devoted his life to making it work better for the average
citizen. Under his leadership, King County became a model not just for
aggressively prosecuting sexual assaults and domestic violence cases,
but also for establishing programs to aid victims.
Norm built
a well-deserved reputation for hiring and mentoring talented young attorneys
of all political stripes, many of whom have gone on to serve as public
officials. He sought out people of integrity who were committed to service.
The continuing contributions of those he mentored will be a lasting legacy
of Norm’s remarkable tenure as King County Prosecutor.
As I invariably
told him when we met, I was very glad that he was my lawyer.
I would like
to convey my deepest condolences to the Maleng family on their great loss,
and to all of the attorneys and staff of the Prosecuting Attorney’s
Office, who have lost their leader and dear friend.
