Transit Board Member Larry Phillips praised his fellow board members
for unanimously passing a resolution authorizing Sound Transit Chief Executive
Officer Joni Earl to establish a Sound Transit Sustainability Initiative.
“Sound Transit is going greener,” said Phillips, a Metropolitan King County Councilmember. “Our mission of getting people out of their cars goes hand in hand with environmental sustainability efforts. I’m proud of the agency for pushing that mission even further to incorporate sustainability measures into every aspect of project delivery—from planning and design to construction and operations.” Under Sound Transit’s Sustainability Initiative, the agency will take all reasonable and appropriate steps to integrate sustainable business practices and strategies throughout the Sound Transit organization. This includes planning, designing, constructing, and operating existing and new transit systems and facilities. The Sustainability Initiative will address:
Sound Transit will use the agency’s existing Environmental Management System to establish objectives and measurable targets. Sound Transit staff will provide periodic reports to the board regarding the agency’s progress in implementing the Sustainability Initiative. “The
Sustainability Initiative will be put into action immediately,”
said Phillips. “That means environmentally-friendly elements will
be incorporated into the final design and construction of University Link,
as well as projects yet to come in Sound Transit 2.” |
