Ferguson works to secure support for Shoreline Seniors, YMCA, Youth and Chamber of Commerce

Metropolitan King County Councilmember Bob Ferguson said this week’s approval of a supplemental County budget will fund critical services for Shoreline and Lake Forest Park seniors, low income individuals, children and local businesses dedicated to preserving the environment. The supplemental budget includes the Shoreline/Lake Forest Park Senior Center, the Shoreline Chamber of Commerce, the Center for Human Services and the Shoreline YMCA.

The King County Executive and Council adopt quarterly adjustments to the County’s annual budget. These supplemental budgets provide for relatively minor changes to the County budget and the funding of certain critical services. The Council approved the supplemental budget legislation on Monday, July 23, and sent it to the County Executive for his signature.

“The priorities expressed in this supplemental budget are good news for Shoreline and Lake Forest Park seniors, kids and families and local businesses,” said Ferguson, chair of the Council’s Operating Budget Committee. “I am honored to assist these four organizations, which are making a difference in our community.”

The supplemental budget includes:

Shoreline/Lake Forest Park Senior Center. The Senior Center provides crucial services in the north county area, such as Meals on Wheels and the Community Dining Program. Funding will make up for recent Federal grant cuts that jeopardize the Senior Center’s ability to maintain current hours of operation.

Shoreline YMCA Youth Wellness Program. The YMCA’s new facility will improve the health of local families with attention to children who are overweight and at risk for health related problems. Funding will support a Youth and Family Center to encourage participation in a variety of creative and energetic physical activities.

Center for Human Services, Out of School Program. With locations in Bothell and Shoreline, the Center for Human Services provides learning opportunities for youth from refugee families and/or living with very low incomes. Funding will support Out of School Programs for high risk youth at three family centers.

Shoreline Chamber of Commerce, Sustainability Program. Shoreline is quickly becoming well-known for efforts to promote businesses committed to preserving the environment by either operating their businesses in an energy and resource efficient manner, or by providing goods and services that help to preserve the environment. Funding will enable the Chamber of Commerce to help businesses with these sustainability and environmentally friendly efforts.
