Statement from Councilmember Larry Phillips on voter approval of County park levies

Metropolitan King County Councilmember Larry Phillips issued this statement on the passage of measures to maintain operations of King County’s regional parks system and to expand and complete the county’s regional trails system as well as support the Woodland Park Zoo:

“King County voters made a prudent investment in the future by supporting our regional parks, trails, and Woodland Park Zoo. By making this investment to keep our existing parks well-maintained and expand the system, the citizens of King County are ensuring that as the region grows, we will continue to have the green space and places to recreate that make this such a special place to live.

“Due to a recent change in state law, there have been questions raised about whether these are truly six-year levies or whether they’re permanent. We are still waiting for a legal interpretation of the statute. Regardless of how the statute is ultimately interpreted, the King County Council intended these to be six-year levies, and I commit to that promise.”
