King County Council pledges to “Eat Local” for Thanksgiving

With the Thanksgiving holiday approaching, the Metropolitan King County Council declared their thanks for local farms and produce by pledging to Eat Local for Thanksgiving. The Council recognized the “Eat Local for Thanksgiving” campaign at their Nov. 13 meeting.

“The Thanksgiving holiday is a celebration of plentiful harvests, and here in King County we have an abundance of farm fresh produce to be thankful for,” said Councilmember Larry Phillips, chair of the Council’s Growth Management and Natural Resources Committee. “The Eat Local for Thanksgiving campaign is bringing awareness to the many environmental, economic, and health benefits of eating locally grown produce and encouraging citizens to choose local ingredients for our Thanksgiving feasts this year.”

“There are so many resources available to our citizens who wish to ‘eat local’ this Thanksgiving” said Councilmember Jane Hague. “We have an explosion of small, local farmers’ markets that join Seattle’s venerable Pike Place Market in providing seasonal fresh produce. And for those of us who don’t want to cook on Thanksgiving, many of our great restaurants are also cooking local – and talking about it. They’ll be easy to locate.”

The Eat Local for Thanksgiving campaign was created to accentuate the connections that buying local has to the environment, use of fossil fuels and energy, supporting our local community, and help ensure that local farmers continue to operate. Many local farmers markets and grocery stores have joined the campaign to highlight local produce this holiday season.

The campaign was conceived and initiated by the Acting Food Policy Council, King County, the Cascade Harvest Coalition and Good Food Strategies and has been made possible through the support of Department of Neighborhoods — Climate Protection Fund and King County's Agriculture Programs. Additional coordinating partners include: Neighborhood Farmers Market Alliance, Farming and the Environment, Seattle Tilth, Jubilee Farm, and the Pike Market Senior Center.
