Women's Advisory Board Projects
- Aging Out of Foster Care Project
In late 2005 the King County Women’s Advisory
Board issued a request for proposal for a consultant
to research the prevalence of young women “aging
out” of the foster care system in King County
and the availability of housing and other critical-needs
options/resources to support this transition.
Every year at least 20,000 youth “age out”
of the nation’s foster care system. Because
the transition process extends well beyond the formal
age of emancipation (18 in most states), at any
given time approximately 100,000 young people in
America are in the process of transitioning from
dependency on the child welfare system to self-sufficiency.
Many of these new adults have little or no resources
to be able to manage their lives independently and
often times end up facing tragic outcomes.
NP Linder Consulting, LLC was awarded the
contract and produced a comprehensive report to the
Board in May of 2006. The Board will be making
recommendations to the King County Executive and the
King County Council prioritizing the findings most
relevant to youth affected by this issue in King County.
