KING COUNTY CIVIL RIGHTS COMMISSION
ANNOUNCES 2006 STUDENT ESSAY CONTEST WINNERS

On January 12, 2006, the King County Civil Right Commission will present their Seventh Annual Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Essay Writing Contest Award for the best student essays on Dr. King's work.

The students selected were: Lena Cardoso of Seattle, from the Lake Washington Girls Middle School, first prize winner of $100; Maya Riser-Kositsky from Lake Washington Girls Middle School, second prize winner of $75; and Karly Birch of Redmond from Redmond Junior High, the third prize winner of $50.

"Our student essayists for the 2006 Martin Luther King, Jr. Essay Contest demonstrated a solid knowledge of the efforts and contributions of Dr. King toward America's living dream of a just and equal society," said Christine Landon, Chair of the Commission. "The best of the essayists, exemplified by our three contest winners, offered us solid examples of Dr. King's life as a guiding part of America's on-going work toward this common goal."

The King County Civil Rights Commission sponsored its annual Essay Contest in the fall of 2005, with the theme: United for the Common Good. The contest was open to all 8th graders in public and private schools in King County and was intended to encourage students to think critically about Dr. King's legacy of peace and justice. All essays were judged on the author's knowledge of Dr. King and his work in the Civil Rights Movement, originality of ideas, development of point of view, insight, and clarity of expression, organization, and grammar.

The King County Civil Rights Commission Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Essay Writing Contest Awards will be presented at the annual King County Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day Celebration ceremony on Thursday, January 12, 2006 at 12 noon, at the Paramount Theatre. This event is wheelchair accessible, ASL interpreted and free and open to the public.
