MARTIN LUTHER KING, JR. COUNTY CIVIL RIGHTS COMMISSION
SEEKS APPLICANTS

The Martin Luther King, Jr. County Civil Rights Commission is accepting applications and would like to encourage individuals in the following Martin Luther King, Jr. County Council Districts: 1, 3, 6, 7, and 9, to consider public service on the Commission. The twelve members are nominated by Council members representing each of the nine King County Council Districts, while the remaining three serve as at-large members, selected by the King County Executive. Each Commissioner serves a three-year term. There are currently four vacancies, with a new vacancy in District 3 effective June 1, 2008. All Commission members are confirmed by the County Council and serve without pay. It is the goal of the county to recruit people from diverse ethnic and protected group backgrounds, including people with disabilities. Commissioners must reside within Martin Luther King, Jr. County. All Commission members are bound by the County Code of Ethics and are required to complete a financial disclosure statement upon appointment and by April 15 of each succeeding year of service.

The Martin Luther King, Jr. County Civil Rights Commission was established in December, 1995 to take a strong leadership role in raising community awareness and involvement on civil rights issues and to advise the County Executive and County Council on matters related to the county's civil rights programs. Thus, the Commission is responsible for reviewing and reporting on the effectiveness and progress of the county's affirmative action, non-discrimination enforcement, and minority/women business utilization programs. It is also responsible for educating the public and concerned groups on methods to prevent and eliminate discrimination and advises county government on human and civil rights issues.

Potential candidates should have interest and experience related to the goals of the Civil Rights Commission, live in the appropriate King County Council District, and be willing and able to commit 8-10 hours monthly to Commission meetings and work projects. Commissioners are expected to attend monthly meetings, held on the third Wednesday of each month from 3:00 to 5:00 p.m., and to participate in committee work which can require additional meetings.
