FAIR HOUSING CENTER OF WASHINGTON RECIPIENT OF INNOVATION AWARD

The Fair Housing Center of Washington was awarded the inaugural Innovation Award from The Nonprofit Center at the Nonprofit Excellence Awards luncheon in Tacoma on March 12, 2007. The Innovation Award recognizes a nonprofit organization that has demonstrated innovative internal or external strategies or approaches designed to achieve improved performance or impact.

The Fair Housing Center was recognized for its strategy to reach new immigrant and limited English speaking community members through an English as a Second Language (ESL) and Adult Basic Education curriculum. Developed in 2001 under a grant from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, the curriculum, "Fair Housing: Understanding Your Rights," is specific to housing with information on identifying housing discrimination, the specifics of fair housing laws, how to advocate on one's own behalf (or for another), and details on filing a fair housing complaint. Last year, 187 students from 22 countries were exposed to the curriculum. The curriculum is designed for use at community and technical colleges and other organizations offering ESL classes statewide. The ESL program is currently funded by Wells Fargo Home Mortgage.
