FAIR HOUSING UPDATE
NEW FAIR HOUSING INITIATIVES PROGRAM!

The Kitsap County Consolidated Housing Authority ( KCCHA) received its first HUD FHIP grant as of December 1, 2007.

The Housing Authority plans to enhance and strengthen its existing Housing Counseling program by incorporating a comprehensive educational and outreach plan to inform consumers about their housing rights and responsibilities under the Fair Housing Act. "In the Right Direction" is proposed to put Fair Housing Rights in the public eye in Kitsap, Mason and Jefferson Counties and address the lack of fair housing services in these counties.

The goals of this project are:
  1. reduce housing discrimination through education;
  2. initiate an advertising campaign to build awareness surrounding Fair Housing; and
  3. identify and refer housing complaints to HUD.
Populations specifically targeted will be Low to Moderate Income Persons, Persons with Disabilities, Minorities and Persons with Limited English Proficiency.

KCCHA's outreach and education will include Predatory Lending workshops, presentations, dissemination of fair housing materials in English and Spanish at local community events. Bremerton Kitsap Access television is partnering to help get the word out by running monthly reader board messages. KITZ radio is broadcasting a quarterly Fair Housing PSA and Trans Ad has been contracted for a Transit Advertisement campaign throughout Kitsap County.

The first major event will take place on February 23, 2007 at the Kitsap Fairgrounds at the First Annual Disability Awareness Starts Here (DASH) Fair. There are three components within the DASH Fair that create a day full of opportunities. These opportunities provide both the disability community and the community at large with education, cultural enrichment and direct positive benefits. KCCHA will be conducting a Fair Housing workshop at this event.
