DISABILITY AWARENESS MONTH 2006 PROCLAMATION
WHEREAS, the month of October has been designated by the United States Congress as National Disability Employment Awareness Month; and
WHEREAS, the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990 and the Washington Law Against Discrimination promote independence, empowerment, and quality of life; and
WHEREAS, reducing physical barriers can often be easily achieved, while changing our misperceptions and rejecting stereotypes can create the greatest opportunities for all, including those with disabilities; and
WHEREAS, King County recognizes the demonstrated benefits of a diverse workforce and experiences every day the valuable contributions of its employees with disabilities; and
WHEREAS, breaking down barriers requires cooperative, sustained, and consistent effort; and we must work together to ensure that people with disabilities can participate fully in the workplace and all aspects of community life; and
WHEREAS, we must continue to work for a community where all individuals are respected for who they are, celebrated for their abilities, and encouraged to realize their full potential and achieve their dreams;
NOW, THEREFORE, we, King County Executive Ron Sims, and members of the Metropolitan King County Council, proclaim October 2006, as
DISABILITY AWARENESS MONTH
throughout King County and urge everyone to join us in reaffirming our determination to achieve a society that affords independence, justice, and dignity for all.
