Housing owners, property managers, tenants, housing advocates – Whatever your role, you must be familiar with the federal Fair Housing Act and other applicable state and local fair housing laws. This knowledge is not only critical to prevent costly violations, it also leads to good business practices.

WHY ATTEND?

The Fair Housing Basics Workshop is designed to help you be proactive – to prevent violations of the fair housing laws before they occur. Attendees will gain insight into the following:
  • Fair housing enforcement agency roles and local fair housing laws
  • Advertising tips
  • Suggestions on developing nondiscriminatory application and tenant selection procedures
  • Guidelines for establishing and enforcing tenancy rules, rule violations and evictions
  • Claims of retaliation
  • Familial status issues, occupancy guidelines and housing for older persons (HOPA)
  • Renting to people with disabilities – reasonable accommodations and modifications issues
The Advanced Fair Housing Seminar provides further training in fair housing topics such as service animals, domestic violence issues, occupancy standards, etc. This is the perfect seminar for those who have already mastered the basics or who need a fair housing update. Bring your specific questions!

Participants at the workshop and seminar receive extensive free fair housing materials, in print and CD format.

WHO ARE THE TRAINERS?

The Fair housing workshop and seminar are co-sponsored and taught by staff from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, the Washington State Human Rights Commission, the King County Office of Civil Rights, and the Seattle Office for Civil Rights.
