Initial Environmental Site Assessment

The King County/City of Seattle-funded Environmental Extension Service (EES) (external link) provides free initial assessments.

  • Assistance includes research on past and present uses, review of existing environmental studies, site visits to determine the likely extent of contamination and help developing possible cleanup options.
  • Private businesses and landowners, nonprofit organizations and municipalities are eligible.

In-Depth Environmental Site Assessment

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) offers free in-depth assessments through its Targeted Brownfields Assessments (TBA) Program (PDF, external).

  • Assistance includes environmental sampling and analysis.
  • Nonprofit organizations and municipalities are eligible via the Brownfields Program.
  • Private businesses and landowners are potentially eligible via the Brownfields Program if the end use of the property will be for a public or nonprofit purpose.

Cleanup Assistance

The King County/City of Seattle-funded Environmental Extension Service (EES) (external) provides free technical assistance in site cleanup.

  • Assistance includes serving as a liaison with the Washington State Department of Ecology, interpreting technical consultant reports, conducting research on cleanup technologies and reviewing remedial action plans.
  • Private businesses and landowners, nonprofit organizations and municipalities are eligible.

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Brownfields Program (external) provides cleanup options and cost estimates as part of its Targeted Brownfields Assessments (TBA) Program (PDF, external).

  • Nonprofit organizations and municipalities are eligible via the Brownfields Program.
  • Private businesses and landowners are potentially eligible via the Brownfields Program if the end use of the property will be for a public or nonprofit purpose.

The Brownfields Program offers low-interest loans to finance site cleanup activities.

  • Private businesses and landowners, nonprofit organizations and municipalities are eligible and must apply through King County.
