Assistance to School Facilities

Get help to improve or expand your school's waste reduction and recycling practices. Or become a Green School by adopting a range of conservation measures.

School Recycling & Waste Reduction Assistance Program

Key benefits of recycling and waste reduction include:

  • Schools can save money on garbage disposal costs by reducing solid waste and recycling. For example, Tolt Middle School in Carnation saved $3,000 in one school year by adding plastic bottles to its recycling program, adding recycling containers, and educating the school population about why recycling is important and what could be recycled in the school's recycling program.
  • Recycling conserves natural resources.
  • Recycling helps foster school pride.

King County helps schools and school districts to:

  • Initiate new recycling programs.
  • Add materials to existing recycling programs.
  • Purchase recycling containers and signs.
  • Educate students and staff about what materials can be recycled in the school's program.

Green Schools Program

Key benefits of participating in the Green Schools Program include:

  • Cost savings: Conservation practices often save money.
  • Recognition: Through this site, media releases and other means, schools and districts receive recognition.
  • Assistance: King County provides targeted assistance to help schools improve their conservation practices.
  • Resources: King County provides supplies and/or equipment as needed.
  • Pride: Participating schools and districts become model institutions for resource conservation within and outside their communities.
