Waste Acceptance Rule Update

King County's Waste Acceptance Rule defines types of waste that are accepted for disposal at King County Solid Waste Division facilities. The intent of the rule is to protect employee and public health and the environment by making sure that dangerous or otherwise inappropriate materials are not disposed at division facilities.

Effective June 20, 2005, the Division adopted revisions to the Waste Acceptance Rule related to the acceptance of construction, demolition and landclearing (CDL) waste, and with changes related to clarity and administration of the rule.

Proposed restrictions on disposal of electronic products, mercury-containing wastes and sharps waste, and on the disposal of "green-tipped" fluorescent lamps are not included in this revision but will become effective on October 1, 2005. Acceptance of most of these materials from commercial generators is already limited by State and Federal regulations so the new restrictions would primarily affect residential generators.

Materials Included:

  • Electronic products:
Including computers, computer monitors, including flat panel and cathode ray tube monitors, TVs, and cell phones.
  • Mercury-containing products:
Including button batteries, fluorescent lamps, including "green tipped" (low mercury) tubes and compact fluorescent lamps; thermometers, switches, and thermostats.

The full Waste Acceptance Rule can be viewed on the Archives and Records Management Web site.
