Managing & Reducing Hazardous Waste

Managing & Reducing Hazardous Waste

Managing and reducing hazardous waste means purchasing, using and properly disposing of products in a manner that reduces the risk of these products to human health and the environment.

Schools can:

  • Adopt policies
    • Establish a written Integrated Pest Management (IPM) policy that outlines procedures for existing schools, new construction and remodeling projects.
    • Adopt a green purchasing policy.
    • Create a chemicals policy that states that the least toxic or non-toxic chemicals will be used in all areas of the school and that any toxic chemicals will be properly disposed.

  • Develop strategies
    • Implement a least-toxic IPM strategy for indoor pests and grounds maintenance.
    • Reduce the use of chemical cleaners.
    • Purchase non-toxic cleaners.
    • Use low-VOC paints, adhesives, partitions, carpeting, and composite wood products.
    • Adopt micro-scale practices to reduce the amount of chemicals used in science classes.
    • Reduce the amount of chemicals used in the auto, photo, wood and metal shops.
    • Properly dispose of outdated chemicals from science labs and other classrooms.
    • Properly label and store science lab chemicals.
    • Reduce the use of fertilizers on school grounds (see Water Conservation for related activities).
