Success Story: Three Cedars Waldorf School

School Location: Bellevue, Washington

Participated in the Green Schools Program: 2003–2005

Waste Reduction and Recycling

  • Recycling containers provided by King County’s Green School Program placed in all classrooms
  • Students created recycling signs for each classroom recycling container
  • Expanded its yard waste composting program, using a yard waste compost bin provided by King County’s Green Schools Program
  • Using containers provided by King County’s Green Schools Program, initiated a food waste collection program

Energy Conservation

  • Worked with Puget Sound Energy to complete a comprehensive energy audit
  • Replaced 260 incandescent bulbs with compact fluorescent bulbs
  • Installed timers for outdoor lights
  • Installed an energy-efficient dishwasher
  • Installed an energy-efficient gas furnace
  • Installed new energy-efficient baseboard heaters
  • Reduced overall energy consumption by 28.3 percent in one year
  • Reduced energy expenses by $1,900 in one year

Reduction of Greenhouse Gas Emissions

The school initiated a carpooling program, complete with mapping to encourage parents and staff to share rides.

Environmental Education

  • Students participated in Stream Watch field trip
  • Faculty participated in a salmon identification field trip

Awards

Received Governor’s award for Excellence in Energy Management.
