Shingles in Paving Demo

LinkUp is working with the recycling and paving community to champion the development of a hot mix asphalt (HMA) end market for tear-off shingles.

LinkUp is working with the recycling and paving community to champion the development of a hot mix asphalt (HMA) end market for tear-off shingles by securing and conducting a paving trial in the Puget Sound area that incorporates this material.

The project includes five phases; it is currently in phase two:

  1. Involve Other Public Agencies and Conduct Stakeholder Meeting – COMPLETED OCT, 2007
  2. Identify and Select Construction Project
  3. Develop Specifications for Use of Tear-off Shingles in HMA and Select and Monitor Shingles Processor
  4. Monitor Production and Installation of HMA and Coordinate Sampling
  5. Produce Report and Publish Results

Read more about the five phases (PDF, 31 K) of the Shingles in Paving Demonstration Project.

Stakeholder Meeting

In August 2007, LinkUp hosted a stakeholder meeting to gather information from businesses, organizations and agencies involved or interested in asphalt shingle recycling. Read the notes from the stakeholder meeting (PDF, 48 K).

A memo summarizing research on the use of asphalt shingles in hot-mix asphalt (PDF, 121 K) was completed in October ´07 and was sent to the stakeholder group.

Advisory Group

An advisory group (PDF, 23 K) made up of industry and agency representatives (PDF, 20 K) has been formed to provide input on project design and key project decisions.

LinkUp will host advisory group meetings during the course of the project and a meeting at the end of the project with the advisory group and key stakeholders to share the results. LinkUp will post meeting notes on this site after each meeting.

Meeting Notes: Oct. 16, 2007 (PDF, 55 K)
Jul. 8, 2008 (PDF, 49 K)

The Shingles in Paving Demonstration Project is fortunate to have received generous commitments of support from Seattle Public Utilities (SPU) and Washington Department of Transportation, both agencies represented on the advisory group. SPU will provide funding to facilitate the work of the advisory group and to develop the HMA design specification. Washington Department of Transportation has offered to design the HMA specification.

Shingle Recycling Forum

Some members of the LinkUp team and the project advisory group (PDF, 23 K) attended the 3rd Annual Asphalt Shingle Recycling Forum (external) in November 2007. Read the advisory group members’ key takeaways (PDF, 46 K) from the Forum.

Hot Mix Asphalt Producer Interview Summary

Local area hot mix asphalt producers allowed us to interview them regarding their awareness of and experience with incorporating tear-off asphalt shingles into HMA. Read the summary (PDF, 43 K) of those interviews.
