Telephone Book Reduction Project
Unwanted telephone books have become a waste problem (and sometimes a litter or nuisance problem) in many communities. Local governments have received complaints about unwanted phone books, from both residents and businesses. Many local governments feel that they (and their taxpayers) bear the financial burden for clean-up, recycling and disposal of unwanted phone books, and they would like the directory publishing industry to take more responsibility for them.

Because unwanted phone books were repeatedly identified as a concern, the National Waste Prevention Coalition decided to address it. In 2006, the Coalition helped bring together several local governments, state governments, U.S. Environmental Protection Agency regional offices and others. These agencies are providing funding for the Boston-based Product Stewardship Institute's Phone Book Project.
