King County helps coordinate the National Waste Prevention Coalition. This organization works nationally and regionally to prevent the creation of waste and reduce the use of resources.
The National Waste Prevention Coalition was founded in 1994. It is primarily made up of people in the solid waste management field. Its members work for local governments, state governments, non-profit organizations, universities, consultants and others.
In recent years, Coalition projects have focused on reducing unwanted mail - for both households and businesses - and reducing the delivery of unwanted phone books.
Waste prevention means reusing and reducing. It does not generally include recycling. Waste prevention is a simple concept: If you create less waste, you consume fewer resources and you don't have to spend as much money to recycle or dispose of your waste. Individuals and businesses can often save a significant amount of money through waste prevention. Along with reusing and reducing to prevent solid waste, reducing toxics also is considered waste prevention.
