EXPLANATORY STATEMENT

If approved, this proposition would authorize the City of Pacific, to issue no more than $595,000 of general obligation bonds to purchase a pumper fire truck with accessories and other life-saving and fire-fighting equipment.

The City Council has found that there is an urgent need for the protection of public health, life and property that the City acquire such apparatus and equipment which would improve fire and life safety capabilities.

Without voter approval, there would be no funds to pay for the new pumper truck and equipment to serve the City and its residents. As a result, the proposed acquisition of apparatus and equipment would not be possible.

The bonds would mature within 10 years, and be paid by annual property tax levies made in excess of regular property tax levies throughout the City, at an estimated average of 29.7 cents per $1,000 of assessed value, or an estimated $29.69 per year for a $100,000 house. No such taxes would be levied or collected until bonds are sold.

Exemptions from taxes for the bonds may be available to homeowners who are 61 years of age or older, or disabled, and who meet income requirements set by state law.

STATEMENT FOR

The City of Pacific has grown tremendously. A new gas station, UPS facility, and a motel are a few of the latest additions. One fire truck is not enough to save a school or an apartment building. The safety and well being of our families should be the number one concern. We must have adequate equipment to deal with any emergency that comes along. The fire department is falling behind and in the future will be insufficient for a city and area that is growing with as much speed as ours. In order to have a safe town the City of Pacific must have an effective fire department and to keep it effective they need to purchase a new fire truck, new SCBA, new equipment for the truck, and a thermal imager. Our fire department has been protecting the citizens of Pacific for a very long time and we should help out by protecting our firefighters anyway we can. Our fire department not only takes care of Pacific, it helps neighboring communities as well. We have some of the best fire fighters here in Pacific, let's get the equipment to help them help us.
