EXPLANATORY STATEMENT

Passage of ballot measure No. 1 will allow the Vashon-Maury Park and Recreation District to issue bonds in a principal amount up to $2,000,000 to fund the costs of improving all or most its parks and to levy property taxes in amounts sufficient to pay the principal of and interest on such bonds as such amounts become due. To provide its citizens with healthy, safe and accessible parks, the District's improvement projects may include drainage, trails, fencing, restrooms, paving, signage, building renovations, upgrading utilities, parking, vegetation restoration, new play equipment, grading, storage, new maintenance equipment, stream restoration and other capital improvements. The bonds may be issued for a term that does not exceed 20 years and will bear interest at a rate or rates that will be determined by the Board of Commissioners of the District upon the sale of the bonds, all as described in Resolution No. 00-10 of the District.

STATEMENT FOR

The voters and residents of Vashon Island have made it clear through the years that they want more and better park facilities. This bond issue will go a long way toward bringing those dreams into reality. What are some of the projects that these funds might be used for? Examples include repair and refurbishing of the buildings at Point Robinson lighthouse for community use, the implementation of the master plan for the Village Green, public bathrooms at Jensen Point, the Village Green and Agren Park as well as new, safe play equipment for Ober Park. There are a host of other park improvements that could happen if we support this bond measure. Repeatedly in surveys and meetings Vashon residents have asked for these facilities to be upgraded and projects to be completed. Let's have parks and public facilities we can be proud of! Let's support this bond!
