It is time that Vashon had a Fire Commissioner who knows first-hand what it is like to serve as a firefighter. In addition to my 16 years as a state and federal prosecutor, I have served as a firefighter on Vashon since 1998. Being a firefighter has taught me to trust Vashon's paramedics, officers, and firefighters. Unfortunately, being a firefighter has also allowed me to witness the bitterness and frustration caused by Commissioners who sometimes act more like our adversaries than our governing board. If elected, I will work with and not against the Fire Department to fulfil our community's needs. I will expand the Department's role in Vashon's Emergency and Disaster Response Plan, and will address and resolve our future needs for Advanced Life Support services. Most of all, I will restore and preserve the neighborly spirit of Vashon that is such a tradition in our Fire Department.

As a long-time Vashon resident, I have helped shape change in our community. I have been a founding board member of the Vashon Aquatic Club, a Guarantor of the Vashon Island Community Care Center, a member of METRO's Citizen Advisory Council, a twice-elected Vashon Island Community Council Representative, and served a six-year term as a King County Cemetery District Commissioner.
For our Fire District to continue its transition from an all-volunteer staff to a combination volunteer/professional department, we need active leadership by your commissioners. The skills of each commissioner should help District management and staff provide first class fire protection to our Vashon-Maury community.
I will bring these leadership skills, along with experience in personnel management, business management and community sensitivity to the office of Fire Commissioner of Fire District 13, Position No. 2.

Community service is important. In the 14 years I have lived on Vashon, I have been active in many volunteer organizations. A few of these are: the Vashon Fire Department for 12 years; the Strawberry Festival Committee for 7 years; and the Holiday Open house committee for 9 years. As a homeowner, I care where and how my tax dollars are spent. I am qualified for this position because I was a dispatcher, First Responder, and an EMT with the Vashon Fire Department. I was president of the Fireman's Association for 3 years. The Vashon Fire Department gave a lot to me when I was a member. I would like to give back to the department and to my community by serving as a commissioner. I would appreciate your vote. Thank you.

Recently, I took the time to study the administration of Fire District Thirteen. I found deficiencies in credit card use, unnecessary travel to places such as the Sun Mountain resort in Winthrop, Sun Valley resort in Oregon and other places. I found that there was inadequate bookkeeping and records keeping. It is my goal to remedy these problems by establishing proper policy and procedures.
Personally, I would like to make absolutely certain that the Vashon Island emergency preparedness plan is operational and that all Vashonites participate in and are aware of the plan. Recent natural events make it imperative that we as Vashonites establish community bonds that will support each other if needed.
