List of Candidates for
KING COUNTY EXECUTIVE:

Santos
CONTRERAS

Republican

Santos Contreras' father fled the Pancho Villa revolution, crossing the Rio Grande on Christmas Eve 1912. His father became a citizen and brought the family to Seattle where Santos was raised in Seattle's Wallingford and Fremont districts.

Santos attended St. Benedict's Grade School and O'Dea High School. After graduating from Seattle University, he served as a U.S. Army officer and saw duty in Korea. He and Sue, his wife of 36 years, have two sons.

Santos had a 38-year career at Boeing. As a director of Union Relations he successfully negotiated labor contracts with the engineers' and pilots' unions without a work stoppage.

Following years of participation in Boys and Girls Club, Cub Scouts, Little League and other community organizations, Santos was elected to the Kirkland City Council. He has served nine years and is deputy mayor. Santos has been a leader in keeping taxes down by preventing property tax increases during five of the last six years.

Santos has been successful in getting neighborhoods, business and government working together. He will bring real-world leadership skills to the job to represent not only the people who live in King County's 39 cities, but those who live in the unincorporated areas as well.

"Boeing has moved to Chicago. Commuters are struggling with the second worst traffic congestion in the country. Our light rail project is a mess. Property taxes are going out of sight.

"Ron Sims has been involved in county government for 15 years, yet our problems get worse. He has had his chance to lead, and he has failed. We need someone with real-life experience who has a history of working effectively to solve problems. We need leadership for a change. We can do better. If you agree, I need your vote for County Executive. Thanks."

FRIES

Libertarian

I'm not a politician. I run my own business and provide for my family of four while coping with traffic, regulation, and taxes.

Voters across King County have clearly said, "No more taxes." But politicians keep pushing the same tax-and-spend "solutions" that got us mired in the current revenue shortfall in the first place. We can't keep going this way. We have to choose a new direction. That's why I'm running for King County Executive.

King County government has consistently grown and become more expensive. But as your county executive, I'll work toward a government that's smaller, more efficient, and less expensive.

As an electrical contractor, I've seen the roadblocks government places in the way of men and women working hard to provide a good life for their families. I want King County to be a place people come to do business, not somewhere they're trying to leave. That means changing the way we regulate individuals, businesses and property.

As your county executive, I will promote innovative, money-saving solutions to our problems. History shows the best ideas come from people working together voluntarily to provide goods and services in a free market. That's the approach I'll take to improving county government services - everything from transportation to resource conservation and management.

It's time to bring real-world solutions to traffic problems. It's time county government stop pushing one-size-fits-all transportation plans, as though Duvall or rural East King County has the same needs as downtown Seattle. As your county executive, that's what I'll do.

For too long, two-party politics has meant higher taxes, gridlocked government, less freedom for you and me, and the same old, tired "solutions." Let's work together to move King County toward freedom and prosperity. For Libertarian Party information, please call 1-800-ELECT-US.

As residents of King County, we enjoy an unparalleled quality of life - natural splendor, a vibrant economy, and strong local communities. But along with this high quality of life has come rapid growth over the past several decades. And, as our daily commute reminds us, these growth pressures have created significant regional and local challenges - challenges that threaten the very qualities that have defined our region. As King County Executive, I have been working hard to address these challenges. Over the last four years, King County has:

  • taken action to address traffic congestion by expanding transit service, accelerating road construction, synchronizing traffic lights and building new park and ride capacity,
  • worked to protect our environment by pushing for stronger water, air and environmental safeguards,
  • pursued effective growth management strategies that have reduced urban sprawl and improved livability in our neighborhoods, and
  • ensured the health, safety and well being of our kids and families by working with Sheriff Reichert and other law enforcement officials on key public safety initiatives.

I believe these efforts have helped protect our unique Northwest quality of life. I also believe that with strong and innovative leadership, we can go a step farther and lay the foundation to create an even better future for ourselves and for future generations; a future where we expand road capacity but also offer residents other transportation choices that are not auto-dependent; a future where rural areas and precious natural resources are protected from the impacts of sprawl; a future where suburban communities continue to thrive and our urban neighborhoods become 24 hour centers with a mix of housing, amenities and entertainment options. With your support, I will continue to work hard every day as your County Executive to achieve this vision.

LOBDELL

Republican

I will apply the same high standards of excellence and fairness to the Office of King County Executive as I have in my 27 years serving the public as a Civil Engineer/Project Manager, and as a business owner. I have been directly responsible to oversee numerous multi-million dollar transportation, utility and environmental projects. In so doing, I have worked closely with councils, commissioners, planners, attorneys, developers, business associations, environmental agencies and many individual citizens, where the REAL IMPACT of the decisions made by the County Executive is felt.

I will carry out the job of County Executive to SERVE the citizens of King County. I will make logical, practical DECISIONS that uphold our CONSITUTIONAL RIGHTS, respect our RELIGIOUS FREEDOMS, protect our ENVIRONMENT, and insure careful use of our PUBLIC FUNDS.

I am proud to have served in the United States Marine Corps and am a Life Member of the Disabled American Veterans. I am a native of Washington State and have lived in King County for the past 14 years. In addition to being a Professional Civil Engineer, licensed in more than one state, I studied nights to obtain a Paralegal Certificate, my Bachelor of Science degree in Management; and soon-to-be completed Masters degrees in both Business and Public Administration.

My unique background in Civil Engineering and Management qualifies me to provide dynamic leadership in addressing the many complex issues now facing our County, including but not limited to: TRANSPORTATION, ENVIRONMENTAL, BUDGET AND HUMAN SERVICES.

I ask for your vote and the privilege of SERVING YOU as your King County Executive.

THANK YOU.
