PORT OF SEATTLE COMMISSIONER POS. NO. 04:
Christopher R.

The Accountability Committee to Elect Christopher Cain is waging an all out grass roots campaign to restore the people's voice to the Port of Seattle. And we need your help.
Let's face it, The Port of Seattle is out of control. Despite escalating costs, overwhelming public opposition and ongoing environmental degradation, the Port of Seattle continues to construct a third runway - without the required permits! What's more, the Port of Seattle is the only port on the West Coast that directly taxes working families to subsidize their projects. Taxpayers are financing programs they don't want.
As a small business owner, father, and lifelong resident of King County, I want to restore accountability to an elected body that is out of control. This is our community and our home. Elected officials should act in our interest, not contrary to it. Together we can restore the Port of Seattle into a public asset, instead of a public liability.
If you endorse accountability, fairness and mutual respect then we can start work towards our goals together. There are indeed many challenges that face us every day that require strong leadership. Together we can overcome them. We can have a voice when we need one. Not just one voice… but a collective voice. A powerful voice… one that commands respect and offers it in return. If you will endorse my campaign: I will work to assure accountability and respect is forthcoming, I will continue to educate myself and speak publicly on issues that affect working men and women from all sectors of our community. I will work to restore credibility for real working people with real lives and real needs.
My campaign is about restoring accountability, fairness and mutual respect to the Port of Seattle.

Jake
JACOBOVITCH
|
|
Jake Jacobovitch is the Port Commission candidate that brings experience as an elected official, a career in transportation and a decade in the maritime industry. He understands that a thriving and active Port will ensure our economy and business communities stay strong and our jobs stay here.
Jacobovitch, a King County Department of Transportation supervisor and former Merchant Marine, understands the importance of integrating the region's transportation system and Port operations. Truck access to Port facilities must be improved. The Port's impacts on our congested roads must be reduced to improve our ability to move goods throughout the region. The Port must act responsibly to their neighbors and the environment.
Jake's many years of labor experience makes him aware that a collaborative partnership with labor is essential for a successful and vibrant Port. Collective bargaining agreements must be settled in a timely manner and worker safety and worker rights must be respected. The safety of the public at Port facilities is of the utmost importance. The Port Police do a very good job, but they are currently understaffed. That must change!
Jacobovitch is well known for his ability to bring people together and solve problems. He is known by County and Regional policy makers for his involvement in growth management and regional transportation issues. He serves as a member of the Puget Sound Regional Council Growth Management Policy Board and is completing his second term as Commissioner of the Vashon Island Parks District. For the past three years he has served as the President of King County's Vashon-Maury Island Unincorporated Area Council. Accountability, access and public participation is what he brings to the table.
Jake is 49 years old and a 25 year Washington State resident. He lives on Vashon Island with his wife Kathy Jacobovitch and their children.

Sea-Tac Airport has to do more to reduce noise and other negative impacts on south end communities. The Port's perceived indifference to south end neighborhoods can not be repaired without new commissioners taking a personal role in airport mitigation. Al Yuen would be honored to lead this effort. The Third Runway has questionable economics and real safety concerns. We need to look now for a new future airport site that protects neighborhoods, while solving our air transportation needs for the next generation.
Keep the Port's Orange Cranes Moving: Containers (cans) at the Port mean economic growth and American jobs. Volumes have dropped 9 percent this year at the Port, the first decline in almost a decade. We need to protect our local jobs. Losing business to California, Vancouver, B.C. and Tacoma is not good business. I can expand trade with our biggest trading partner, China. Like all Americans, I was hurt at how China treated our soldiers and aircraft earlier this year. However, we must stay engaged with China economically, if we want China to continue to evolve. As the Past President of the Seattle Chinese Chamber of Commerce, there is no one in Seattle better positioned to do this trade development work than Al Yuen.
Protect our Fishing Community: Keep our port committed to their needs. We also need to evaluate merging the Port Police, with the King County Sheriff's Department as a way to save money and increase officer coverage. Create radio alerts of 1st Avenue South and Ballard draw bridge openings to help commuters find alternate routes.
I, Al Yuen will bring community voices to the Port Commission and an understanding of port management, trade and community relations that is essential for preparing the Port of Seattle for the 21st century.

As an active port commissioner, I would appreciate the opportunity to continue serving your interests.
During my service to the people of King County, I have worked hard to expand trade opportunities for Puget Sound. Trade generates family-wage jobs, business revenues, a healthy environment and a robust economy.
My main goal has been to make the Port of Seattle more competitive. Currently Long Beach, Oakland, Vancouver B.C. and other West Coast ports are modernizing their facilities. We must intensify our efforts to keep jobs here.
To accomplish this, I have five primary goals:
- protecting and enhancing our maritime industrial base and marine environment, and implementing our new harbor development strategy;
- modernizing and expanding Sea-Tac airport, to make it more user-friendly and efficient, including completion of the third runway;
- relieving traffic congestion through freight mobility projects that separate roads from rail crossings;
- continuing development of the local cruise ship industry and advancing the port's e-business initiative;
- strengthening our relationships with local communities, citizen and environmental groups, labor unions, our trading partners and our customers.
The port's activities are for and about people. I am proud of the educational and workforce preparedness programs we have developed over the years. Our apprenticeship, intern, disadvantaged youth and schools programs are educating hundreds of new workers and opening doors for our children. PortJobs and AirportJobs have been particularly successful. Creating opportunities for the next generation is particularly important to me.
I have worked closely with and enjoy the support of many labor, business and community groups. I have a record of direct engagement, openness and integrity, and a reputation for making necessary and important decisions.
I would sincerely appreciate your vote in this election.
