I have been a member of the Lake Washington School Board for the past eight years. During this time, I have consistently worked for improved education, accountability, communication, and community involvement. I have helped hire a new superintendent, begin the process for modernizing eleven schools, and adopt a fiscally responsible budget. I champion to provide programs to allow all children to succeed. LWSD continues to face challenges. The largest is our community's expectation for higher academic successes at a time when revenues have diminished. We also face new opportunities. The LWSD Board of Directors recently adopted a governance model that allows it to focus on student achievement and performance. I look forward to the many opportunities for the Board to interact with its constituents to discuss achievement, performance and assessment. My eight years of experience has prepared me to continue the work necessary to maintain our outstanding district.

My parents sent seven children to MIT and Stanford. But "higher standards" got me fighting for my 3 boys over nightly kindergarten homework, and running a timed mile in first grade. I opposed adoption of new no-arithmetic math texts with homework that baffled this computer scientist. I opposed WASL 4th grade items that were beyond college entrance tests, and requiring WASL to graduate.

Fix what's broken. Don't break what isn't. Unrealistic "Outcomes Based Education" has misguided the incumbents to focus on "reform" at the expense of teaching.

I have appeared in local and national media on education and diversity. I was a runner up for 2000 State Superintendent. I volunteer for Cub Scouts and elementary strings. I'll be the independent voice working for, not against parents. Debate, don't just "facilitate" the Brave New Schools. Don't pile on unnecessary graduation requirements or stressful projects. Take back your schools with Arthur Hu.
