As a School Board candidate, when I ask
people what they want from our schools, they consistently put two tasks at the
top of their list: first, teach our children how to speak, write, read, think
and count correctly; and second, help them to develop reliable standards of
right and wrong that will guide them through life.
My campaign focuses on those themes.
Whatever we do in education, we should ask whether or not we are meeting those
goals. Improving education requires not only doing new experimental things but
doing and remembering some good old things. That has been the dominant view in
American education for over two centuries. But a number of changes have
diverted schools from these great pursuits.
Unless we are willing to embrace some
silly positions, we need to admit the need for moral and intellectual
standards. In the real world, without standards and judgments, there can be no
progress.
How do we do it? Candidly, it is by
setting high standards and by exposing our children to good character and
inviting its imitation. I will continue to work toward these goals. Thank you
for your support.
