King County citizens work hard to
protect and enhance the quality of life we enjoy here, and King County
government strives to balance economic growth with environmental conservation.
As a councilmember since 1991, I helped develop many of the policies protecting
our clean air, healthy waterways, rural areas, parks and open spaces included
in our growth management plan.
Now, as King County continues to
be a great place to live, work and play, we face new challenges requiring
strong leadership. As chair of the Budget and Fiscal Management Committee, I
have worked hard to balance our general fund during times of extreme economic
stress. It has meant cutting $93 million - nearly 10 percent of the general
fund - in just two years. But in doing so, I have made sure that basic public
safety, health and human services are preserved without a general-fund tax
increase.
The budgetary crisis will continue
for the foreseeable future, but by continuing to work effectively with my
colleagues and by engaging citizens to find solutions, we will find the means
to meet our service and fiscal responsibilities.
Thank you for the wonderful
opportunity to serve, and I ask for your vote to help meet our future.
