Southwest Suburban Sewer District

BALLOT SYNOPSIS OF
RECALL CHARGES AGAINST
MIKE JAMES COLASURDO,
SOUTHWEST SUBURBAN SEWER DISTRICT COMMISSIONER

Shall Mike James Colasurdo, Southwest Suburban Sewer District Commissioner, be recalled from public office for acts of malfeasance, misfeasance, or violation of the oath of office because:

That, as alleged by Stan Carey, a King County registered voter, Commissioner Mike James Colasurdo:

1. Engaged in racial discrimination resulting in a claim with the Washington State Human Rights Commission based on statements made in 2001. The Commission made a finding of reasonable cause that Commissioner Colasurdo discriminated against an employee because of the employee’s race.

2. Between December 1999 and March 2003, held meetings regarding District business in violation of the Open Public Meetings Act.

SOUTHWEST SUBURBAN SEWER DISTRICT
COMMISSIONER MIKE JAMES COLASURDO
RESPONSE TO THE RECALL CHARGES

Effective leadership requires a willingness to sacrifice popularity when making difficult decisions. I have made tough decisions and as a result the district is now operating with 30% fewer employees, and saving one million dollars annually.

A jury has never substantiated allegations made in the recall by former commissioner Stan Carey & the Human Rights Commission. One such accusation stemmed from sharing my experiences as a Marine in the Korean War with employees. That story was later twisted into a claim of racism. During my term we have hired more minority employees than in the history of the district.

Allegations of illegal meetings between myself and another commissioner are completely without merit. The former Manager made this claim after he was terminated. This same individual is also seeking a monetary claim.

This recall has been driven by disgruntled employees. When I began my term our sewer district epitomized governmental waste and corruption, and I fought hard to put an end to it. As a result your sewer district is now in its best financial shape.

In my opinion the local newspaper has failed in its journalistic responsibility to fair and unbiased reporting. They have failed to interview me regarding the issues and have declined to print the whole story.

Don’t allow yourself to be deceived by a small group of special interest people. I ask for your vote and support so I may continue to insure the voters and their money receive the best possible value and lowest possible rates.

Recall, Yes
Recall, No
