Frequently Asked QuestionsNov. 2, 2004 General and Special ElectionsWhat Kind of Election Will This Be?Please follow these links for complete list of candidates and measures on the ballot. The election will be conducted in 540 polling places serving 2,616 precincts. Approximately 600,000 mail ballots will be issued for the General Election. Mail ballots must be postmarked no later than Election Day, November 2, 2004. Registered voters in vote-by-mail precincts and ongoing absentee voters who have not received a ballot by October 20, 2004, should call the Elections Office at 206-296-8683 (VOTE). What is the expected voter turnout?To date, King County has 1,017,156 active registered voters. The final count of active registered voters will be determined October 22, 2004. King County Elections expects approximately 82% of voters to participate in the 2004 General Election, above average for a presidential election. Approximately 58 percent of that turnout is expected to be votes cast by mail ballot. For more information on voter turnout visit Election Turnout Forecast How do I Obtain a Mail Ballot?Registered voters can obtain a mail ballot in person at the King County Elections Office until 6:00 p.m. on Monday, November 1, 2004 at: Records, Elections and Licensing Services Division Ballots may also be requested over the phone, fax or by completing a one time absentee request from our web site. (http://www.metrokc.gov/elections/absentee.htm#oneTime.) One-time absentee ballots may also be requested by phone or fax: To ensure timely ballot delivery by mail, we do not recommend requesting an absentee ballot by phone or fax after Thursday, October 28, 2004. State law does not allow new absentee ballots to be issued on Election Day. Replacement ballots may be issued to registered voters who did not receive their original ballot or who have lost or damaged their original ballot. Where and when can I register to vote?Voters may register in-person at the King County Elections Office through 6:00 p.m. October 18, 2004. The King County Elections Office is open Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and will be open for business every Saturday through October 16, 2004 from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Mail ballot voters who have not received their ballot before Election Day should go to their polling place and vote a provisional ballot. Where can I get up-to-date election night results?Election results will be reported beginning at 8:15 p.m. on Election Day. at www.metrokc.gov/elections. Election staff will be available to handle telephone requests for election results from the public and campaign committees on election night at 206-296-1565. Frequently Asked Question: Why are the poll results sometimes just 98% on election night? Answer: Occasionally, a polling place will have problems with its Accu-Vote device it will lose power or telephone service for the building, or some other mechanical /technical problem. In this case, the ballot results cannot be transmitted to the Election Center on election night, and the ballots must be tabulated and/or the memory cards uploaded to the computer on Wednesday morning.
