What is the expected voter turnout?

To date, King County has 1,000,349 active registered voters. The final count of active registered voters will be determined September 3, 2004.

King County Elections expects approximately 41 percent of voters to participate in the 2004 primary, well above average for a presidential election year primary. Approximately 70 percent of that turnout is expected to be votes cast by mail ballot.

For more information on voter turnout and absentee statistics visit Election Turnout Forecast.

How do I Obtain a Mail Ballot?

Mail ballots may be obtained in person at the King County Elections Office until 4:30 p.m. on Monday, September 13, 2004 at:

Records, Elections and Licensing Services Division
King County Administration Building
500 Fourth Avenue, Room 553
Seattle, WA 98104

Regular office hours are from 8:30 a.m. through 4:30 p.m., Monday through Friday. Beginning Thursday August 26th election staff is available to answer phones until 9:00 p.m. through Election Day.

The elections office will also be open Saturday, August 28th from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. for in-person registration.

State law does not allow new absentee ballots to be issued on Election Day. Replacement ballots may be issued to registered voters who did not receive their original ballot or who have lost or damaged their original ballot.

One-time absentee ballots may also be requested by phone or fax:
Voice: 206-296-VOTE (8683)
FAX: 206-296-0108 TTY: 206-296-0109

To ensure timely ballot delivery by mail, we do not recommend requesting an absentee ballot by phone or fax after Thursday, September 9, 2004.

Voters in vote-by-mail precincts and ongoing absentee voters who have not received their ballot before Election Day should go to their polling place and vote a provisional ballot. Polling place locations can be found on our web site at "Polling Place Lookup".

Where can I find up to date election night results?

Election results will be reported beginning at 8:15 p.m. on Election Day. Comprehensive election reports will be available after 8:15 PM on Election Day at www.metrokc.gov/elections.

Election staff will be available to handle telephone requests for election results from the public and campaign committees on election night through 12:00 am at 206-296-1565.

Why are the poll results sometimes just 98 percent on election night?

Occasionally, a polling place will have problems with its Accu-Vote device. This machine might lose power or telephone service in the building, or some other mechanical /technical problem. In this case, the ballot results cannot be transmitted to the Election Center on election night, and the ballots must be tabulated and/or the memory cards uploaded to the computer on Wednesday morning. All ballots and memory cards are stored in a locked, secure facility.
