How do I vote in the primary?
在初選這我該怎樣投選？
Using
a consolidated ballot, you must pick a party if you want to vote for candidates running
for partisan offices. You may vote only for the candidates in one political party
in the August primary. Your privacy will be protected; no record of your political
party selection will be kept. Complete your ballot by voting the nonpartisan portion
of the ballot.

You
will cast your votes by following three easy steps:

- Pick
a party by making your selection at the top of the ballot.

for candidates in that party (each party has its own section on the ballot).

you choose not to select a party.

What will the ballot look like?

The
single ballot provides a place to indicate your party preference (Democratic or Republican).
It then presents the partisan contests in three sections, one for each party. Nonpartisan
contests and ballot measures, available to all voters, are on the back of the ballot.
Ballot instructions are provided. The ballot is color coded to assist voters in making
their party selection and then locating the part of the ballot dedicated to that
party.

In the General Election you can vote for any candidate of your choice regardless
of political affiliation.

recent history, Alaska and California have made the switch to open primaries. Montana,
Michigan, Missouri, Maine and Florida have chosen ballots that limit voter participation
to one party in the primary.

majority of states have closed primaries, which require voters to affiliate with

No.
Voters will indicate their party preference on the ballot, and no record is kept
that links that choice back to the voter. The new primary is a private-choice system.
Your party choice applies only to the King County primary ballot you complete in
August. The State of Washington does not require party registration.

I've heard other counties are using multiple ballots in the new primary. Why did
King County choose to use a single ballot?

To
help determine what ballot format would be the most effective, King County mailed
sample ballot formats to 1,600 randomly selected voters and conducted a series of
in-person focus groups with respondents. There were four major findings:

- Voters
followed the instructions and correctly adjusted to the changes in numbers far greater
than in other states.

the separate ballot design (separate ballots for each party and one for non-partisan
races and ballot measures; voters choose one ballot and throw away the other, unused
ballots) had its supporters, people were concerned about the costs and waste of mailing

though many people were angry about the change, they considered voting too important

What happens if I don't pick a party?

If
you do not pick a party, your votes in the partisan section of the ballot (e.g.,
Governor, senators, representatives, etc.) will not be counted. However, you can
still vote in the nonpartisan races (Judges, Superintendent of Public Instruction)
and ballot measures (levies and bonds) listed at the end of the ballot – and
that means your vote will be counted. Poll machines are designed to give voters the
opportunity to select a party preference if they mistakenly vote for candidates in
both political parties and did not select a party preference.

If I choose a party, but vote for a candidate in another party, will my ballot be
tossed out and not counted?

No.
If a vote in a particular partisan race differs from the party preference you selected,
your vote in that particular partisan race will not be counted. All of the partisan
votes you cast that match your party preference will be counted (one vote per office).

Federal
law requires new voting equipment be in place at every polling place to ensure people
with low or partial vision and other physical disabilities can cast a ballot independently
and in private. Until 2006, voters who are blind have relied on a family member or
friend to vote. In addition to the standard paper ballot, voters will have the option
to cast their poll ballot using an accessible voting unit (AVU). The machines are
federal and state certified and thoroughly tested prior to each election. Each unit
has a voter verifiable paper audit trail, a printed version of their ballot choices
that the voter approves before casting his or her choices. Learn more about accessible

What about the Green Party or other parties, do they appear on the primary ballot?

No.
Minor party candidates are nominated by convention and nominating petitions. Once
qualified, minor party candidates are placed directly on the General Election ballot
and do not appear on primary ballots.

What happens if I make a mistake when marking my ballot?

The
best way to avoid mistakes is to read through the instructions, look through your
ballot, and then choose a party – and then vote for candidates in that party
only. If you are filling out your ballot at home, there is an easy process to follow
to correct mistakes. Instructions for doing so are printed at the top of the ballot.
You may also contact King County Elections to request a new ballot. If you are voting
in a polling booth and make a mistake, ask the poll workers for a new ballot. They
will destroy the spoiled ballot.

Can someone get into our King County voting system and change or disrupt the outcome?

County’s voting system is not connected to an Internet or Intranet nor does it
have any wireless components. The only access to our vote tabulation system and equipment
is from inside King County by authorized King County staff. We have three layers
of security, to ensure that no single individual has a means to alter the system.
Additionally, our system has redundant back-up procedures to protect its integrity.
