Islanders are rightfully proud of what we have done as a community.  I am running to make sure the conditions which led many of us to move here continue.  The Community Center will need to be upgraded so that it remains a resource for Islanders - in particular, seniors who depend on it for programs.  This time, we must first determine how much we are willing to pay for the upgrade and then develop a plan consistent with that amount rather than the other way around.  City and School capital projects need to be jointly planned so voters know what they will be asked to fund in the future.  Our business district is being turned into a park and ride lot for the entire Eastside - that must stop.  Being a Councilmember is an opportunity to perpetuate the best our community has to offer.  I hope to be part of that process.

If elected, I would view myself as a public servant.  Work to keep Mercer Island a great place to live.  Be available to all residents at all reasonable times.  Stay within the limits of Referendum 47 on property taxes.  Stick up for neighborhoods.  Avoid tax increases.  Work to solve the parking problem at the North end.  Stand up for Mercer Island in all dealings with the state and county.  That means keeping HOV lane privileges and listening to the citizens on issues like the recent monopole decision.

My educational background includes a BA in Government from Harvard College.  For the past several years, I've worked as Executive Director of a national educational organization headquartered in Mercer Island.  In that capacity, I have helped foster cooperation among many strong-willed people, and I have been an effective and careful fiscal manager.  If elected, I would bring those skills to city government.
