SEATTLE SCHOOL DISTRICT NO. 1 DIRECTOR DISTRICT NO. 06
:

Sharda

BOWEN

The Seattle School District should return to its fundamental role of providing quality education.  It should recruit and retain good teachers, and use every dollar to improve the quality of our children's education, while meeting the varying needs of students.

The school board needs to focus on assuring a good learning environment, where regular building maintenance is not neglected, and distractions from learning are quickly dealt with.  Sharda Bowen knows that academic excellence is the path to a better tomorrow for all our children.

The current school board has allowed private advertising companies to get a foothold in our schools, with exclusive soda pop machine contracts and commercial TV programs.  This must be stopped.

Sharda wants to eliminate waste, ensuring that homeowners are not unnecessarily burdened with levies.  The District is wasting millions of tax dollars by tearing down schools and then erecting larger ones.  The District already has an excess of space.  It now serves only half the students it once did:   in 1962, the District had 99,000 students; by 1999, this number had fallen to 48,000.  Sharda believes we should preserve, not demolish, our historic neighborhood school buildings.

Parents are ultimately responsible for the education of their children, and they should not surrender that authority.  Sharda knows first hand the benefit children receive when they get individualized attention.  Her son was home schooled during his elementary years and he is now a Seattle public school 8th grader.  Sharda is a working mother and a checker in a local Seattle grocery store.  She is a member of, and a Shop Steward for, UFCW Local 1105.

Elect Sharda Bowen to the Seattle School Board, and she will work to ensure the District is accountable and uses resources wisely.  Please vote for Sharda Bowen.

Endorsed by King County Labor Council.

Barbara

SCHAAD-LAMPHERE

Barbara Schaad-Lamphere has a passion for educating our kids.  She has dedicated the past ten years to improving the quality of education in Seattle Public Schools.  Elected to the School Board four years ago, Barbara has helped make major changes in the way our community approaches education.

Together with both Superintendents John Stanford and Jospeh Olchefske and the rest of the School Board, Barbara has been instrumental in these changes:

    • Academic standards:  Seattle has adopted comprehensive academic targets to be used to evaluate and improve K-12 education in this city.   • Teacher selection:  Hiring based solely on the seniority of a teacher has been eliminated; schools now get to choose the teachers that best suit their building.  • Teacher evaluation:  The School Board has taken steps toward evaluating teachers based on the performance of their students, not just how many years they have been on the job.  • Student assignment:  Busing based on race has been eliminated and kids are freer to attend their neighborhood schools.  • Funding schools:  In the past, funding of schools was based on how many adults were assigned to the school; now funding is based on the needs of the individual kids in each school.  • Building and remodeling:  The voter approved plan to remodel and reconstruct aging school buildings across the district is on time and within budget.

The changes adopted in the past four years have been remarkable.  But Barbara believes there is still much to be done.  We must continue our work to use academic standards to improve school programs.  Teacher evaluations must be tied to the performance of their students.  And state funding of school districts needs to change to reflect individual kids' needs.

You can help in these goals.  By re-electing qualified school board member Barbara Schaad-Lamphere.
