PHILLIPS

Democrat

My decision to run for the County Council was founded on my desire to help area residents maintain the quality of life we all cherish.  With King County enjoying great prosperity, we must strive to balance economic growth and natural resource conservation.

Since 1991, we have made major gains in striking this balance.  As a councilmember, I helped develop many of the policies protecting clean air, healthy streams and rivers, rural areas, open space and parks now included in our Growth Management Plan.

Now, King County continues to be a great place to live, work and play, providing wonderful communities for children and families.  But prosperity brings many challenges requiring strong leadership -- leadership I have brought to the Council.

As chair of the Regional Water Quality Committee, I have worked with elected leaders to protect water quality standards, minimize urbanization impacts on Puget Sound, and preserve our lakes, creeks and wetlands.  As founder and chair of the Cedar River Council, I am helping produce a local, accountable plan for restoring our salmon runs while protecting our economy.

Working with citizens like you, I will help manage growth, protect our local economy, and preserve the qualities of life we most treasure.

As your representative to the King County Council, I pledge to:  • listen and care about what you have to say.    • reduce traffic congestion, including measures to increase capacity at bottlenecks.    increase the efficiency of our police and court systems so public safety and crimes with victims are the highest priority.  • create balanced solutions to the challenges we face concerning the environment.  • oppose regulation which burdens local businesses or hinders artistic creativity.    reject all PAC and corporate contributions.  • serve just one term.  The incumbent has already served 8 years.  • support reducing the council from 13 to 9 members.  • employ no more than 4 staff assistants instead of the currently allowed 7.  • accept only partial salary, equal to the percentage of citizens who vote for me (example:  60% would be $55k).

I advocate freedom, equal rights, civil rights, free markets, school choice, tolerance of diverse lifestyles, property rights, and common sense.

I oppose the drug war, discrimination, new taxes, and corporate welfare.

I am not a career politician, but I am a volunteer, donor, and entrepreneur.  I am also a rock climber, runner, cyclist, inline skater, and student pilot.
