Accessible Voting Information

Jacob Struiksma casts a demonstration ballot at a meeting of the Greater Seattle Chapter of the National Federation of the Blind.  Jacob is an avid proponent of the accessible voting unit, as it provides independence to voters who are blind.

  1. Check in with the poll worker and ask for an audio ballot.  You can request your ballot to be visible on a screen in large print or not visible (hidden).  The audio ballot comes with a headset and a numeric keypad.

  2. The poll worker will give you a plastic voter access card encoded with the ballot style that corresponds with your precinct for the audio ballot.  The card is about the same size as a credit card.

  3. Put on the headphones and place the numeric keypad in a comfortable position.The numbers on the keypad are arranged like a telephone keypad.  The top three buttons from left to right are 1, 2, and 3.  The second row is 4, 5 and 6; the third row is 7, 8, and 9; and the bottom row is asterisk, the number zero, and the pound sign.  There is a raised bump on the number five.

  4. Hold your voter access card with the computer chip facing up and on the left side.  The chip is a raised square facing the voter on the left side of the card.  A poll worker will be assigned to assist you with the voting process at any time during your visit at the polling place.

  5. Insert the voter access card into the slot at top right side (about one o’clock) of the accessible voting unit.  The slot where the card is to be inserted is shaped like a left bracket, with two tips extending from the right side of the screen.  Place the card flat against the two tips with the computer chip facing you and on the left of the card, and push the card firmly until it clicks.  When you insert the card, the audio instructions will begin automatically and will ask you to choose a language, English or Chinese.

  6. Vote by pressing the keys on the numeric keypad when prompted by the recorded instructions.  For example:

    • Press number 5 to register a vote for a particular candidate and to vote yes or no on an initiative.

    • Press number 1 to decrease the volume, and number 3 to increase the volume.

    • Press the asterisk key to decrease the playback speed, and the pound sign to increase the play back speed.

    • Press zero at any time to replay the instructions.

  7. When you come to the end of the ballot, you will have an opportunity to review a summary of your choices.  After listening to the summary, you can cast your ballot, or you can reject the choices you have made and return to the ballot to change your vote.  You may listen to a summary and reject your ballot up to two times.  The third time that you receive a summary of your choices, the ballot is automatically cast.  Ask your poll worker if you need assistance.

  8. After you cast your ballot, your voter access card will eject automatically.

  9. Remove the card from the slot and return it to the poll worker.

  10. Congratulations, you have voted a secure ballot.
