Accessible Voting Information

Audio Ballot
The optional audible ballot allows voters with visual disabilities to cast a secret ballot without relying on a family member or poll worker. Using headphones, a recorded voice guides the voter through the ballot.  Votes are recorded using a numeric keypad

Ballot Style
A specific number within a single precinct that associates candidates and ballot measures to an individual voter based on the voter's registered home address. To find your precinct or county council district, visit www.metrokc.gov/elections/gis.

HAVA (Help America Vote Act)

The Help America Vote Act is a series of sweeping election reforms passed by Congress after one of the most contested races for the White House in American history.

HAVA election reforms include:

  • The elimination of punch card and lever voting equipment;
  • Second chance voting, which gives voters the opportunity to view their ballot and correct any mistakes;
  • The implementation of a single statewide voter registration system; and
  • The implementation of accessible voting equipment by 2006.

HAVA (助美國投選法令)

Numeric Keypad
Using headphones, a recorded voice guides the voter through the ballot. Votes are recorded using a numeric keypad.  The audio ballot begins by reading instructions on how to use the numerical keypad. Learn how to operate the keypad.

Precinct
A geographical subdivision created for voting purposes. A precinct can contain between 200 to 400 registered voters.
投選區

Qualified Voter
A legally registered voter who is at least 18 years old, a resident of Washington, a U.S. citizen and not convicted of a felony. Voters must register their residential address.
合資格選民

A single consolidated database of registered voters from all 39 counties in Washington State.

Touch Screen Voting
One of two ways to vote on an accessible voting unit. Voters who cast ballots electronically can verify that their selections have been recorded properly using a voter-verifiable paper ballot.

Valid ID
State law requires voters voting at the polls must present one of the following forms of identification:
  • Any form of photo identification
  • Voter registration card
  • Copy of current utility bill, bank statement, paycheck, government check or other government document that identifies the voter by name.
有效身份證明

Vote by Mail

An election conducted entirely by mail. Currently 70 percent of voters in King County cast a ballot through the mail.

King County Executive Ron Sims proposes transition to an all vote-by-mail system by 2007.  If this happens, King County's 527 polling places will be replaced by a few regional voting centers to provide voters access to replacement ballots and accessible voting units.

Voter Access Card
A credit-card size card that stores the races and ballot measures a voter is qualified to vote on. At the polls, a poll worker will program ballot information corresponding to the voter's precinct on to the card after their identification is confirmed.  The card contains no personal information, and does not record how the voter cast his or her ballot.  Once programmed, the card is used to activate the accessilbe voting unit.  The card can only be used once.
選民提選票卡
是一張型如信用咭,載有選民有資格參與投選的候選人及議案選舉項目的卡片。在投票站,一名投票站工作員,在確證選民身份後,按選民的選區為選民編製提票卡。 此卡不載有任何個人資料,及不會記錄任何有關選民怎樣投票的資料。 編製後,該卡可容許選民使用方便投票機。此卡祇限用一次。
Voter Verified Paper Audit Trail (VVPAT)

Under Washington State law, a voter verified paper audit trail (VVPAT) is required for all accessible voting units.

Voters who cast ballots on accessible voting equipment can verify their selections have been recorded properly using the paper audit trail before they cast their ballot.  Voters can read the summary and verify their choices, and choose to accept or reject the ballot and make changes.

選民紙上查證選票系統 (VVPAT)

按華盛頓州法律,所有方便體能有障的選民的投票機皆須裝有選民紙上查證選票系統 (VVPAT)。

使用方便投票機的選民,皆可在未投票前,用紙上查證選票系統查證他們在選票上所作的選擇。選民可參閱選票摘要及查證他們的抉擇,然後決定接納或把選票作廢然後重選。
